How does Laser Cutting Works?

People are usually aware of what the term “LASER” refers to, which is Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. However, how does Laser Cutting works? How does light cut through steel?

What is Laser Cutting?

Fiber laser cutting machines work by focusing highly intense light onto the cutting surface, rapidly melting or ablating the surface to produce the finished work item.

Laser light is differentiated from “normal” sun or electrical light sources by being:

In a fibre laser cutter, light is generated by semiconductor diodes, the light is channelled and amplified through fiber optic cable then collimated or straightened and focused by a lens onto the material to be cut.

Fibre laser cutting machines have a number of advantages over those using traditional CO2 laser sources. Diode light generation is 200% more efficient than via a CO2 laser, and delivery is far simpler, with no expensive optical mirrors. The focusing lens, unlike on a conventional CO2 laser machine, is sealed in the cutting head and thus not a consumable item.

If one examines the price-to-performance ratio of the different models, the main cutting speed benefit of the higher-power 4 kW laser is in mid-range materials from 6 to 8 mm thick. There are also small benefits in thickness capacity when cutting non-ferrous materials, typically an increase of one gauge of material when compared to the 3kW product. This helps only customers who cut a lot of material in the 6 to 8 mm range or who wish to cover all eventualities, as it is their only laser cutting machine.
Clearly, high-power lasers offer the most flexibility when they are able to operate on materials of various thicknesses. Our Amada-AJ machines have developed with high pierce rates on medium to thick materials with the ability of Beam Control (adjust the beam shape dynamically according to material thickness). This approach means that a 7kW platform can therefore be used across a wide range of workpiece thicknesses up to 25mm.

Fiber laser sources offer the following benefits:

To conclude, Fiber Laser cutting combined with CNC technology is a highly accurate and efficient metal profiling process widely used in the manufacturing industry.

This cutting method uses a focused, high-power laser beam to melt or vaporize material in a small area to create the desired shape or pattern on a work piece. A non-contact thermal process can create intricate patterns with narrow kerfs.
